To make a block, print out the diagram in a size you like, cut it apart, and use the pieces as patterns. Don't forget to add a 1/4-inch seam allowance to each piece!

Cleopatra's Fan    (Laura Wheeler)

We would put this block together by making each ray separately and then joining them together.

Just remember to add seam allowances when you cut out the pieces.

Friendship Knot       (Finley)

Finley didn't offer any hints on how to put the pieces into the background for this block. The seamlines in red below are the option we would use.
Cut 4 each of 1a, 1b, 1c, 1d and 2 in Fabric 1
Cut 4 each of 3a, 3b, and 4 in Fabric 2—or 4 each of the combined 3a, 3b, and 4 without seams
Cut 4 each of 5 in Fabric 2
Cut 1 of piece 6 in Fabric 2

Friendship Knot       (Wheeler)

Cut 4 each of 1a, 1b, 1c, and 1d in Fabric 1
Cut 4 each of 2a, 2b, and piece 4 in Fabric 2
Cut 4 each of 5, 6, 7, and 8. These should be from at least two fabrics not used elsewhere in the block.
Cut 1 of piece 9 in Fabric 1

Friendship Knot      (Hall)

Cut 4 each of 1a and 2a in Fabric 1
Cut 4 each of 2a, 2b, and piece 3 in Fabric 2
Cut 4 each of 4 and 6 in Fabric 3
Cut 8 of piece 5 in Fabric 3
Cut 1 of piece 7 in Fabric 3

Friendship Garden     (Wheeler)

As beautiful as the block is, it is awkward to make because every possible assembly method involves Y seams and curved seams.

We've included an optional simplified block below, with dotted lines in the diagram. If you use them as additional seams, you can make the block in quarters, or even in eighths. We'd advise using quarters, though, so you don't accidentally make the wrong number of right-facing or left-facing eighths.
