Delores Hinson included this block and all its names in her 1973 book A Quilter's Companion.

Midget Necktie

Midget Necktie

This block, with its now hopelessly outdated name, was published in a 1937 edition of the Kansas City Star. It was designed to be a scrap block with a different print for the lighter pieces of each bowtie square. (The small block is pale, but that's how it is in the Star too.)

The Star published the block in the configuration at left, leaving the placement inscrutable. In our whole-quilt mockup of the block, we've shown one possibility.

Squares & Stripes

This 12x12-grid block was No. 150 in Clara Stone's Practical Needlework (1906). The original was pictured with the lower and left edges repeated on the upper and right edges, making it a 15x15 block. Which one is correct? Stone isn't telling. We've provided a whole-quilt mockup of each.

Shadow Box
Shadow Box

The name is from Maggie Malone's 5,500 Quilt Block Designs (2003), but this design is usually a part of other blocks rather than a stand-alone.

Cross

New Pattern is one of the oldest published block designs. It appeared in an 1857 issue of Peterson's Magazine, a competitor of Godey's Lady's Book. Peterson's outlasted the increasingly fusty Godey's by 20 years. Carrie Hall added the name Cross in 1935.

The 1897 block shown at left, the LAC's #319, got its name for no reason we can see. Click on the block to see a whole-quilt version.
